District nurse supports student with vision screening

Thanks to a partnership with El Camino Health, the Sunnyvale School District (SSD) was able to complete 5,611 vision and hearing screenings so far this school year.

This milestone represents a comprehensive effort across all 10 SSD schools, providing essential health services to approximately 2,826 students. These screenings are more than just a routine check; they are a vital first step in ensuring that physical barriers to learning are identified and addressed early, allowing every child to focus on their education with clarity.

This achievement is made possible through a long-standing partnership with El Camino Health and the El Camino Healthcare District (ECHD). Since 2008, this relationship has bolstered SSD’s mission to support the "whole child"—addressing not just academic needs, but the emotional and physical well-being of every student.

Through the ECHD’s Healthcare Access and Delivery Grants, the district receives crucial resources that help bridge health disparities. By bringing healthcare services directly to the school campus, the partnership removes common barriers such as transportation or insurance gaps, creating a more equitable environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive.

While the 5,611 screenings highlight the scale of the program, the partnership fuels several other core health initiatives that support SSD families year-round:

  • Direct Care and Care Coordination: Registered nurses and health staff manage chronic conditions like asthma, allergies, diabetes, and seizure disorders. This includes individualized health plans and precise medication administration.
  • Complex Case Management: For students with multifaceted needs, the district coordinates across healthcare and community systems to ensure medical and social factors do not negatively impact school attendance or learning.
  • Early Intervention: By identifying unmet needs through screenings, the district can connect families with providers before minor issues become major obstacles to success.

The Sunnyvale School District remains deeply grateful for El Camino Health’s sustained commitment. This collaboration is a powerful affirmation that when community leaders and educators work together, they build a healthier, stronger, and more resilient future for every child.
